Who this is for, and what it helps you decide

Small teams and solo creators making AI comic dramas or motion comics; authors on China Literature platforms such as Qidian and WebNovel who want to know where adaptation opportunities come from; and English-language Wattpad writers watching live-action vertical-drama adaptations.

It helps you decide whether DramaBuddy belongs on your next comic-drama tool shortlist, whether your work is better positioned to be picked from a platform IP library or to build serial readership first, and whether to plan chapters around vertical-drama episode pacing.

What China Literature announced

According to Sina Tech and DoNews reports on October 29, China Literature CEO and president Hou Xiaonan announced that day, at the international summit of Tencent's Global Digital Ecosystem Conference, that the company's comic-drama assistant DramaBuddy is now integrated into Tencent WorkBuddy. Users can call 10 comic-drama skills, including script design and storyboard design, from the WorkBuddy workspace without switching platforms, which the company pitches as "generating comic-drama assets from a single sentence."

DoNews also relayed the wider plan: an IP library of China Literature titles "confirmed by authors"; production from script and storyboard to finished episodes, with one-click conversion into 10 languages; distribution through Qidian's comic-drama channel and the overseas app ToonScroll, plus WeChat, Tencent Video and third-party platforms; and creator incentives. DramaBuddy was already relaunched as an all-in-one platform at China Literature's creator conference on October 16; this week's change puts its entry point inside Tencent's AI work assistant.

Figures disclosed at the same event (21st Century Business Herald, DoNews): by mid-year WebNovel had more than 30,000 AI-translated works, contributing about 40% of the platform's fiction revenue, and revenue from smaller-language titles grew 160% year on year; 50 comic dramas on ToonScroll have passed 10 million views. The reports also cite first-half short-drama and comic-drama revenue above 430 million yuan, more than triple a year earlier, but that figure comes from the company's 2026 interim report and is not new this week.

Wattpad's second adaptation goes live

Wattpad announced on its company site on October 15 a partnership with ReelShort to adapt three Wattpad stories into live-action vertical series: Just One Kiss premiered September 27 and, by Wattpad's count, had passed 30 million views at announcement; Worth the Chase by FLEURNJARDIN was set for October 27; and Taming The Playboy Boss is planned for early 2027.

ReelShort's own series page lists Worth the Chase as released on October 27, 67 episodes, completed, tagged romance, sports and friends-to-lovers. Our October 18 issue covered the deal's announcement; this is the second title arriving on schedule.

What remains unclear

For China Literature we relied on press reports, not an official release from the company or Tencent. The reports do not say whether DramaBuddy inside WorkBuddy is paid, how far access extends to individuals, or who owns the rights to generated assets. How authors "confirm" titles for the IP library and how revenue is shared are not public.

The 160%, 40% and 30,000 figures are company claims without independent verification, and no absolute revenue for smaller-language markets was given. Wattpad has not published how stories are selected or what authors are paid. We did not use view counts for Worth the Chase because measurement differs across trackers, and we did not test any tool.

What it may mean for creators (editorial inference, untested)

For comic-drama teams: putting DramaBuddy inside WorkBuddy suggests China Literature wants to bundle tools, IP and distribution for outside producers. If you lack licensable source material, the terms for opening its IP library are worth watching; if you already have your own stories, check who owns generated assets and finished episodes before building your core workflow on someone else's tool.

For web novelists: the two routes differ. China Literature picks from its own IP library and converts at scale with a tool; Wattpad picks serials whose readership is already proven and hands them to ReelShort for live action. Either way, finished works with clear chapter pacing and strong openings look easier to adapt. This is editorial inference, not confirmed by either platform.

Method & limitations

On October 31, 2026 (Beijing time) we read Sina Tech and DoNews reports from October 29 and a 21st Century Business Herald report from October 30 on China Literature's announcements at Tencent's summit, Wattpad's October 15 partnership announcement on its company site, and ReelShort's series page for Worth the Chase. China Literature's claims are reported only where outlets agree, and all business figures are marked as company claims; implications for creators are editorial inference and labelled as such.

We did not read an official China Literature or Tencent press release and did not sign in to or test DramaBuddy or WorkBuddy; all business figures are self-reported and unverified. Wattpad and ReelShort have not disclosed selection criteria, author pay or how views are counted. We did not contact any of the companies.
