What creators should take from this (our view)
The points below are our editorial inference from the table, not claims made by the sources:
- Five apps hold about 79% of the market outside China, so study their genres and format requirements before pitching.
- China's growth is led by free, ad-supported viewing, so pacing has to keep people watching without a paywall.
- Outside China, payments and subscriptions still dominate, so cliffhangers and paywall episodes still matter. See the [short drama beat sheet template](https://news.shorstory.com/en/articles/short-drama-beat-sheet-template/) and the [vertical drama script format template](https://news.shorstory.com/en/articles/vertical-drama-script-format-template/).
Limits and definitions
- Figures outside China come from a paid Media Partners Asia report; we cite only its public page and press coverage, not the full report.
- The ¥100bn China figure is an official spoken statement; DataEye's scope includes animated dramas and platform investment. Neither can be added to or directly compared with ex-China revenue.
- Sensor Tower counts app-store in-app purchases only, excluding ads, web-store payments and third-party Android stores, so it understates total revenue.
- Other firms, such as iiMedia, give much lower 2025 China figures, which shows how much definitions vary. We found no verifiable public figures from Omdia or Apptopia this time, so none are included.
- Terms are defined in our [short drama glossary](https://news.shorstory.com/en/articles/short-drama-glossary/).

Method & limitations
We re-read six public pages on 2026-11-01 (Asia/Shanghai), included only figures stated on those pages, and labelled each figure's basis. The creator takeaways are our own inference and are kept separate.
Mostly analyst estimates or forecasts on different bases that should not be summed; full paid reports not read; firms without verifiable public figures excluded.
