In brief
Start with the intended distribution platform
When selecting screen references, begin with the platform closest to the planned release. DataEye’s September analysis shows markedly different chart compositions: Douyin’s top 100 contains 43 3D titles and 57 photorealistic AI dramas, while Hongguo’s 100 are all classified as 3D. These are the source’s labels, not independent reassessments.
Published October 12, 2026, the analysis uses monthly added views for Douyin and peak heat for Hongguo. The measures cannot be combined or used to compare two first-place ranks directly. Reported themes such as disaster stockpiling, period romance and entering a fictional world are reference leads, not a market-wide genre ranking.
Neither chart decides whether a team should switch
Focusing only on Douyin’s 57 photorealistic titles misses Hongguo’s 100 3D titles in the same month. Focusing only on Hongguo misses the other distribution environment. The evidence broadens the reference pool without establishing a format suitable for everyone.
Supply, classification, selection and distribution may affect these counts, but their effects are not measured here. Without all releases, exposure opportunities, revenue and costs, neither charting probability nor profitability can be calculated.
Use a key scene to judge what the image must communicate
Return to one original conflict. If a scene turns on a change of allegiance, examine expression, exchanges and reactions. If action or a contested resource drives it, examine positions, consequences and spatial relationships. Detailed imagery cannot replace that information.
This is an editorial comparison method, not a genre-to-format rule established by the charts. Photorealism needs consistent characters and performance; 3D also needs expressive characters and clear staging. Both must communicate who acts and why the situation changes.
Include the cost of changing a working process
State the target platform, the length the story needs and what the team can already deliver consistently. If considering a format change, list the additional assets, performance control and revision work. A count of 57 charted works is not a reason to allocate 57 percent of production capacity to photorealism.
If the choice remains open, compare storyboards or legitimately available footage for the same original conflict, holding the objective and information constant. Identify a necessary action or reaction that an option cannot communicate before commissioning a small test. No production experiment was conducted for this article.
Make the rationale specific to a story beat
A useful format decision explains how the chosen expression helps one scene and what additional work it requires. If the rationale is only that a look appears more often on a chart, examine references closer to the intended platform and genre.
The evidence still covers September; it has not become an October trend. Comparable exposure, cost and outcome data, if obtained later, could test the rationale.

Data source 1Method & limitations
Reuses the previously read, attributed DataEye republication on TVOAO. Period: September 2026. Douyin and Hongguo each contribute a source-defined top 100. The retained chart presents Douyin’s 43/57 title counts with source attribution.
Format labels were not independently reassessed title by title, and platform metrics differ. Complete supply, equal-age exposure, revenue and cost data are absent. Counts do not establish market share, causal advantage or an October trend.
