Short drama brief, Nov 8: VeYou shuts down as only 13% of US viewers use drama apps; Urban Decay's ReelShort series hits 3.8M views in 5 days
Hollywood producer Tommy Harper's vertical app VeYou ended service on November 6 and moved its originals to TikTok, and This Week In Media on November 6 cited a Reach3 survey of 944 US adults in which 44% had watched a full microdrama but only 13% had ever used a microdrama app and 6% had paid. Brand and chart signals arrived the same week: L'Oréal's Urban Decay says its six-episode ReelShort series Ghost Hunter Hotline drew about 3.8 million views in five days, Insightrackr's October estimates (published November 6) put ReelShort, DramaWave and PineDrama atop downloads and DramaBox, ReelShort and NetShort atop revenue, and in China an AI microdrama about the poet Xin Qiji premiered on Shandong Satellite TV while Tencent Video streamed the AI horror series Into the Backrooms. For English-language producers and writers, distribution now means pricing both free social shelves and paid apps; every view and download figure here is brand-reported, survey-based or a third-party estimate we could not audit.
